I agree with Norman E. Grech that Malta was brave long before the George Cross and that the flag is vastly higher in value and importance than any or all medals.

He is spot on with his arguments why the George Cross, as much as it has a special place in the history of Malta, should never have been put on the Maltese flag.

The George Cross was a nice gesture by the British at a time when they considered that the Maltese should be thankful and honoured by the recognition. But let's no't kid ourselves, the George Cross didn't make us equal - independence and the recent EU membership did.

There rubble of the bombings could still be seen well into the late 1950s and early 1960s - and the opera house is still in ruins today.

The Maltese Cross would have been a vastly more appropriate symbol for Malta to put on its flag than a medal bearing a foreign king's name.

But even the Maltese Cross would diminish the flag which stands higher in status than any embellishment as it is the symbol of the sum total of all embellishments.

No other thing can even begin to approach a flag as a nation's symbol.

I seem to vaguely remember learning a poem at school about the wisdom of leaving the Maltese traditional flag alone and not make any additions to it.

Is it still taught in schools?
