Bonera: Milan have signed Daniele Bonera from Parma for an undisclosed fee. The 25-year-old defender has signed a contract until 2010 with Milan. Bonera has been capped 11 times by Italy but missed out on a place in the World Cup. He spent four seasons at Parma, playing 114 games in Serie A after joining from Brescia in 2002.

Shevchenko: Andriy Shevchenko said Chelsea supremo Roman Abramovich was behind his £30m move from Milan this summer. Shevchenko, 29, claims Abramovich tried to sign him for three years before he eventually joined in May. "When Roman first approached me I told him I was happy at Milan but now I have a child and another is on the way. He asked me again to join Chelsea this year. I talked very closely with my wife about this. It is family motivation but it had to be the right club."

Mido: Egypt striker Mido has left a good impression at Roma following his return to the club after an 18-month loan spell at Tottenham. Coach Luciano Spalletti hinted Mido could play a part in his plans. "He's a motivated player," Spalletti said. "He must only settle down. I've seen him playing few times and he's physically good and also he's good at heading."

Toni: Fiorentina are locked in a war with striker Luca Toni who has been claimed that he is looking to leave the club. Toni signed a long-term contract last year. "We are in war with him," said Fiorentina sporting director Pantaleo Corvino. "He has intention to leave but we want to keep him."

In Germany: League Cup QFs - Hamburg vs H. Berlin 1-0; Schalke 04 vs Bayer Leverkusen 1-1 (Schalke 04 win 9-8 on pens).

Gatlin: World and Olympic 100m champion Justin Gatlin said last night he had failed a drugs test in April. "I have been informed by the US Anti-doping Agency that after a relay race I ran in Kansas City on April 22, I tested positive for testosterone or its precursors," Gatlin said. "I cannot account for these results, because I have never knowingly used any banned substance or authorised anyone else to administer such a substance to me."
