The first phase of the Cottonera Waterfront landscaping project is nearing completion, three months after the works started.
Spurred by the Urban Development Ministry, with the involvement of the Malta Transport Authority and the consortia involved in the Cottonera Waterfront project, the total investment will be in the region of Lm400,000.
All the major infrastructural works are now virtually ready, with the laying of about 6,000 square metres of granite paving having been finished last week.
The asphalting of the narrow stretch along the front was completed two weeks ago; access to this road will be controlled since the entire area will be pedestrianised.
The next step involves the installation of street furniture, including benches, planters and lighting. Most of the tenders for the provision of these items were issued in the past few weeks.
The completion of the infrastructural works gives the green light to the opening of the first commercial outlets along the waterfront.
The first of these are expected to open at the restored Old Treasury building in about two weeks' time. Other outlets are expected to follow in the coming months around the Menqa area by the St Angelo bastions.
The landscaping project is considered to be a crucial element in the regeneration of the waterfront, since it will contribute towards making this area the centre of activity in the Three Cities.
The ferry service connecting the Cottonera to the Valletta Waterfront will be starting trips from this area. Calls for tenders for the provision of the service have just been issued by the Malta Maritime Authority.
