July saw the end of the golf season and the remaining competitions are mainly social events but still very highly competitive.

The main sponsors of these events ensure that there is a high level of competition by providing some excellent prizes.

In the final event of the season, Tony Vella and Olga Proell were crowned RMGC champions after both displayed solid scoring and excellent performances throughout the three rounds of the competition.

It was a keenly-contested affair with the top golfers all vying for the coveted trophy.

Both Charles Robson and Peter Satariano, the latter having had a great season, failed to match Vella's consistency.

Maureen Borg and Manuela Roth chased Proell all the way but in the end the leader proved uncatchable.

There were fine showings by our Far East members Hideo Hirao, who won the centenary plate, and Yashuhiro (Hiro) Uechi, who claimed the July medal competition.

This overseas input ensures continuous and varied competition, and a great motivator for local golfers to lift their game.

Thirty players took part in the women's Moya Hann competition, sponsored by Nokia, with Anne Thompson and Joanne Cassar placing first and second respectively.

At junior level, Chris Bergedahl performed well at a recent international, placing eighth overall.

The juniors are training hard following the end-of-year exams, performing well in the senior competitions and always placing high up in the rankings.

The Sparkasse competition was won by Nathan Farrugia with 39 points. The sponsors, Sparkasse, presented a fully-paid holiday for two in a five-star resort in Tunisia to the winner, and trophies and mementos to all participants.

The Playcraft competition was a success story for Bernard Bugeja who tied scores with four other competitors, but then won on the count-back scoring system.

The new season will comprise some excellent competitions, with the Playmobil and BMW events promising to provide an interesting spectacle.
