One World... Scheduling the past

Mepa schedules a rubble wall, Lija

This rubble wall is approximately 50 metres long and is separating different private properties. The construction of the wall reveals a high level of workmanship and reaches a height of about five metres. Such high rubble walls were characteristic of large private gardens of town houses in the old village and town cores, such as in the Three Villages, Zejtun, Zebbug and Siggiewi. During the past decades several of these high rubble walls were demolished to make way for new development, and are now very rare survivals. The wall represents a very interesting element of the local vernacular architectural repertoire both in terms of the building techniques employed and also with respect to its high aesthetic qualities. An Emergency Conservation Order was issued twice (GN 618/97 and GN 885/04) due to development applications affecting this rubble wall.
