Two men were yesterday remanded in custody after being accused of a hold-up on a supermarket in San Gwann on Tuesday afternoon.
Steve Spiteri of Msida and Clayton Cremona of Mosta, both 24, were accused of committing a hold-up and theft from APG Supermarket, illegally arresting Alfred Grech and slightly injuring him, stealing a vehicle and carrying a firearm without a licence.
The two were arrested in Msida soon after the police received a report about the hold-up. Several of the police cars were deployed and the one with Police Superintendent Pierre Calleja and Inspector Christopher Pullicino in it intercepted the getaway car in Rue d'Argens, near Arcidiacono's showroom in Gzira.
The two men were stopped by the police at gunpoint and arrested.
The police are alleging that the two men raided the supermarket and had already removed the cash register and some cigarettes when the shop owner resisted.
The police claimed the owner was beaten on his head with the cash register before the thieves escaped. In opposing a request for bail, the police argued that Mr Cremona was meant to be under house arrest after being accused of another theft.
Police Inspectors Silvio Valletta and Joseph Mercieca prosecuted.
Lawyers Louis Bianchi and Joe Brincat were defence counsel.
