The Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses has expressed disappointment that the government is still undecided on whether to grant a warrant to nurses.
Union general secretary Colin Galea said that despite a number of meetings with Health Minister Louis Deguara, a decision on the issue has not been taken.
The union believes nurses should have the same professional recognition as other professions as well as a warrant.
Mr Galea expressed his satisfaction that the Labour Party's health document, approved during last weekend's general conference, promises that the MLP in office would introduce warrants.
Answering a parliamentary question last month, Dr Deguara said the issue was being considered.
The Health Ministry said yesterday Dr Deguara had promised the MUMN, during a recent meeting, he was considering the issuing of warrants.
The ministry said nurses already benefit from full autonomy in their practice through the law which regulates health professions.
The government has over the years shown it recognises nursing and midwifery through a number of issues, including the setting up of a directorate for nurses and sending nurses for training abroad, the ministry said.
