Pembroke dominate the scene
Make clean sweep of all three titles at stake
At the end of last week's third and final round from the 2006 MAAA Clubs' League, Pembroke Athleta were confirmed champions after a clean sweep of all three titles at stake - men and women Open and youths (men).
Pembroke owe their success to all-round strength in most competitions. On the day, Pembroke athletes also managed to claim a significant number of events.
They won five events in the Open Men thanks to Jeandre Mallia (100m), Mark Herrera (5,000m), Jean Paul Callus (javelin), Vittorio Aquilina (high jump) and the 4x100m. In the women's league, Lisa Bezzina (800m, 1,500m) and Lorna Mifsud (400m, javelin) both won two events each. There were other victories for Rebecca Camilleri (triple jump) and the relay team.
In the youths category, Pembroke won four out of five events.
Michael Sullivan was first in the triple jump and javelin. There were other victories for Christian Vassallo (3,000m) and the relay team.
Sacha Dunlop (Savio) was the winner of the 400m race in a promising time of 55.68 seconds.
Perhaps the best performances on the day were those of the experienced Mario Bonello and Rachid Chouhal.
In the 200m, Bonello (La Salle) staved off the challenge of Nicolai Portelli (Libertas) and Owen Camilleri (Pembroke) to win in 22.27 seconds. In the long jump, Chouhal (Zurrieq Wolves) was a comfortable winner with a leap of 7.09 metres.
The men's 800m was an interesting race to watch.
Despite a slow start, the runners gave it their all in the second lap with Allister Bezzina (Aloysians) managing to get the better of Mellieha's Mario Debono.
Bezzina's winning time for the distance was 2:06.8.
The final MAAA Track and Field programme of the season will be the Summer Meet today.
First event starts at 6 p.m.
