Johan-Giovanni Attard, 25, of Birkirkara, was yesterday granted bail against a deposit of Lm500 and a personal guarantee of Lm1,500 after being charged with theft.

Mr Attard was charged with stealing from a self drive car hired to Lars Ryholl.

Police Inspector Michael Mallia, prosecuting, objected to a request for bail.

Following submissions by the defence, the court accorded the accused bail "against stiff conditions to send a message against theft that could potentially harm the tourist industry".

Lawyer Josè Herrera assisted the accused.
