A Shola Ameobi double and a late strike from Emre secured Newcastle United a place in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Cup after they beat Intertoto Cup opponents Lillestrom 4-1 on aggregate.

Ameobi served notice of his determination to lead the line for the injury-hit Magpies this season with his first-half double as Glenn Roeder's men looked sharper than they had in the first leg of the tie at St James' Park, which had ended 1-1.

The breakthrough came for Newcastle following a set-piece after 28 minutes as Ameobi followed up to score after Otto Fredrikson had saved from Charles N'Zogbia.

Newcastle doubled their lead in the 36th minute when Scott Parker finished off a good run with a cross which was stabbed home by Ameobi to put the visitors in firm control.

Lillestrom, who had Malta striker Michael Mifsud in their starting line-up, had more of the possession in the second half but rarely threatened Shay Given's goal.

Turkish midfielder Emre added a third in the final minute with a curling shot that finished into the top corner on an encouraging afternoon for Roeder.
