I read recently about the plant Lychnis Chalcedonica or, as better known, the Maltese Cross. It is a short-lived perennial native of Russia and Siberia.

It was probably brought to the Mediterranean by the Crusades and to North America in the early 19th century. I grow it here in Canada for the name if not for anything else.

It is also known as Jerusalem Cross and a few other names but Maltese Cross stands out. It hates dry soil and should be watered frequently especially in the hot Malta summers.
