Veteran Gordon Asciak displayed some of his old qualities yesterday as he partnered Daniel Ceross and won a crucial doubles match against Uganda in a Euro/African Zone IV qualifier at the Marsa Sports Club.

Asciak and Ceross started their match against Patrick Olobo and Patrick Ochan with the result standing at one-all.

Earlier in the day, Matthew Asciak, Gordon's son, beat Olobo 6-1 7-5 but that advantage was cancelled out by Ochan's 6-3 7-6 victory over Ceross.

The doubles was a nail-biting affair as the Maltese lost the opening set 7-6 but won a close second 7-5 to stay in contention. In the decisive third set, the Maltese pair came back from 3-1 down, reeling in five games in a row to win the match.

Today, Malta play their second match in Group A against Iceland. The latter beat San Marino 2-1 yesterday.

In Group B, Madagascar had the better of Azerbaijan 3-0. Senegal withdrew from the tournament at the last minute. The other nation in Group B is Mauritius.
