Obituary - Fr Cherubim Abela, OCD

Fr Pius Sammut, OCD writes:

When on June 5, 1841, John Bosco became a priest, his mother told him: "Now you are a priest, now you are nearer to Jesus. I have not read your books, but remember that saying Mass means suffering. Suffering for others. Think only of the salvation of the souls; do not worry about me..."

Indeed, priesthood demands the ability to love, the ability to self-sacrifice. This is what came to my mind when I heard of the death of Fr Cherubim Abela, a Discalced Carmelite priest who died on June 6, at the age of 82.

Born in Valletta, the first of 10 siblings, he joined Carmel when he was only 17 years old. It was 1940 and World War II was about to start. The war conditioned all his formation years. He did all his studies in the Priory of St Alphonse in Valley Road, Birkirkara, where today stands the Sanctuary of St Therese. He was ordained a presbyter in 1947 by Archbishop Michael Gonzi.

He was a quiet man, always preferring to work back stage. He hated the limelight and yet he spent time in all four convents of the Terezjani - Tas-Silg, Ta' Xbiex, Birkirkara and Cospicua. His passion was technology and anything that has to do with mechanics. Machinery fascinated him. Forty years ago, he was the first one in Malta to build an electronic organ. He always had a cheerful word for everyone.

When I became Provincial, he was one of the first to give me solid advice. "Do not let anything discourage you," he told me smiling. "In God everything is possible!" His last recorded words were addressed to a companion of his, Fr Cyril Borg. "Cirill, ta' did-dinja kollox jghaddi" - "Cyril, everything that pertains to this world passes away..." Wise words indeed coming from a wise man.

Fr Cherubim was a faithful minister of the mysteries of God, devotedly imitating Jesus Christ by "teaching the Christian faith... solely for the well-being of the people" he was sent to serve.

Bishop Adeodatus Micallef, former Bishop of Kuwait and personal friend of Fr Cherubim led the funeral Mass that was held at St Therese Sanctuary, in Birkirkara. Fr Victor Mallia, Provincial, delivered the homily.
