Repairs on Manwel Dimech bridge are expected to start in September, Roads Minister Jesmond Mugliett announced yesterday during the annual general meeting of the Rent-A-Car Association.

European Regional Development Funds will fund three-quarters of the €6 million project.

The repair works will be carried out in two phases, with traffic diverted to one bridge while work proceeds on the other.

A ministry spokesman said the new parallel bridges would have wider lanes to include adequate acceleration and deceleration lanes.

The spokesman said the tender for works was recently awarded to a consortium of foreign and local companies. He said final traffic management preparations were currently underway.

It is not yet clear when the work will be completed, though the project is expected to last several months.
