St Theresa Primary School in Kercem recently held its first open day to mark the beginning of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Carmelite nuns' arrival in the Maltese Islands, the beatification of their foundress Madre Maria Crocifissa Curcio, and the setting up of the school.
President Eddie Fenech Adami and Mrs Fenech Adami, accompanied by Speaker Anton Tabone, the Minister Giovanna Debono, Bishop Mario Grech and Kercem mayor Joe Grima were present.
Year 6 pupils organised a quiz, while Year 4 and 5 pupils enjoyed a hands-on pottery session. Year 3 pupils worked at handcrafts, Year 1 and 2 pupils participated in "Cookie Cooking Little Cooks", while the kindergarten children had fun with computers.
The highlight of the morning was the inauguration of the new library dedicated to the Carmelite foundress. The President unveiled a plaque commemorating the occasion, which was then blessed by the bishop.
Activities continued in the afternoon with a Kindergarten classes' activity and a musical.
The day ended with Year 6 pupils' school-leaving ceremony, and a thanksgiving Mass, led by Bishop Grech who presented students with their certificates.
The school council presented a painting of Our Lady of Mount Carmel to the school head, Sr Carmen Bonnici. A reception then followed.
