A 20-year-old girl from Attard has won 89.7 Bay Radio's dream job award, after fighting off stiff competition from no less than 300 applicants.

Elinor Barbara was taken by surprise and held back tears as she signed the agreement which ties her up with the popular radio station for a month, during which listeners will hear her, judge and decide on whether she stays on for another five months.

Ms Barbara, formerly an employee on board a cruise liner, will experience the excitement of working alongside top DJ Jonathan Abel during his breakfast show.

She will also read the news, conduct interviews and undertake several other radio-related tasks. She will be earning Lm500 during her first month at Bay, with the chance of earning Lm3,000 if listeners vote for her to stay on.

Since March, listeners were encouraged to apply to audition for a six-month job doing a host of different jobs in the radio industry, such as co-host or newscaster.

Ten finalists were eventually chosen and asked to do some recordings and, once judged, the remaining candidates were sent to Paceville to report live during an England World Cup game.

"This prize confirms Bay as the premium source when it comes to huge exciting giveaways," station manager Terry Farrugia said.
