At the ongoing Commonwealth Championships in Melbourne, Malta has already featured among the medal winners after an excellent second placing by Sue Abela and Melissa Anastasi in the ladies doubles.
Malta's participation commenced with the ladies singles in which Abela placed ninth from 32 bowlers, racking up a 1,175 total over six games. Anastasi finished 12th on 1,144.
In the male singles, the Maltese duo of Ray Falzon Reale (1,140) and Brian Farrugia (1,103) classified 13th and 18th respectively.
While Falzon Reale and Farrugia struggled in the doubles, placing 15th, Abela and Anastasi shone in the ladies division, shooting an excellent 2,349 total from their six games to clinch second place. The Maltese pair were deprived of gold by just 70 pins, the top spot going to the English pairing of Fiona Banks and Katey Jowsey. Australians Ann-Maree Putney and Tracey Madden were third.
In the mixed doubles, Malta's best position was achieved by the pairing of Farrugia and Abela who placed a respectable 12th with a 2,307 tally. The second Maltese team of Falzon Reale and Anastasi also totalled 2,307, as did the Wales 2 team, but the Championship rules for tie-breaks placed Falzon Reale/Anastasi in 13th place, and the Welsh in 14th.
