One of two Maltese international judo referees, John Zammit, recently attended a European seminar in Krakow, Poland. The meeting was obligatory for all national federations in view of future EJU activities as new regulations were introduced to those present.

During the seminar the new rules were explained in detail by EJU Refereeing Commission officials.

An important change, among the ones explained, dealt with the new Tatami layout.

Only two colours are now being used in Europe - red for competition and green for the safety area.

Another change was to ensure that competitors win bouts with a throw or a hold rather than penalties. Referees were encouraged to give points for attaches and not penalties.

Zammit will now meet all local table officials and referees to discuss the new regulations in preparation of the European Cadets Championships which will be held in Malta next year.
