Australian Robbie McEwen outsprinted world champion Tom Boonen of Belgium yesterday to win the second stage of the Tour de France over 228.5 kms from Obernai to Esch-sur-Alzette.
McEwen added a ninth stage victory to his name in the world's greatest cycling stage by beating Boonen in a mass finish.
Norway's Thor Hushovd finished third to reclaim the overall leader's yellow jersey from American George Hincapie.
Hushovd had four stitches inserted in his right arm after he caught it in an advertising board as he sprinted to the finish of the first road stage on Sunday.
"McEwen was strong but I managed to forget the pain," he said.
Today's third stage takes the peloton over 216.5 kms from Esch-sur-Alzette to Valkenburg in the Netherlands.
