Juanito Camilleri, the newly appointed rector of the University of Malta, yesterday called on President Eddie Fenech Adami at the Palace in Valletta.

This was one of a series of visits he intends to make to the country's leaders, authorities and civil society, the university being an integral part of Malta's socio-economic development.

The university's strategy could not be formulated outside the local context, the new rector said.

While congratulating Prof. Camilleri, Dr Fenech Adami said the university had made great strides over the last years. It was a key player in the country and needed to be in contact with other players.

The educational system had to be integrated into society and respond to the current needs, he added.

Prof. Camilleri replaces Prof. Roger Ellul Micallef, who was not re-nominated to the post by the government.
