Bishop Mario Grech last Tuesday held his first ordination ceremony at the Cathedral in Victoria.
During a concelebration with Maltese and foreign priests, he ordained Joshua Muscat of Nadur and Michael Curmi of Xaghra as deacons.
In his homily, Bishop Grech thanked all those who in some way or another helped in the youngsters' formation as deacons, especially Bishop Emeritus Nikol Cauchi, Seminary rector Fr Anton Teuma and his collaborators, their parents who are benefactors of the Church, and their respective parishes.
Bishop Grech referred to Holy Orders as a sacrament that helps Christians understand Christ and also helps the Church to realise the importance of the deaconate's role in fulfilling its mission.
"The presence of you, deacons, is proof of what our mission is, mine as Bishop, and all of us as Christians," he added.
The Bishop talked about how deacons are to carry out their role and how they are to fulfil themselves with God's spirit so that he may fill them with holiness.
