Birkirkara SJ Open Sea Series

Zammit, Zarb win first race

The first race of this year's Birkirkara St Joseph Open Sea Series was held recently and hosted by the Bognor Regis Sports Club of Bugibba.

Mark Zammit clocked the best time over the two-kilometre distance in 31 minutes 3 seconds. First swimmer in the women's event was Isabelle Zarb in 37 minutes 43 seconds.

This year, the organisers experienced a sharp drop in the number of participants, mainly due to the persistent jellyfish invasion. In fact, a number of swimmers had to abandon their swim half-way through the race.

After the first race, Zammit is leading the provisional standings ahead of Dermot Galea and Keith Galea, both joint second in 31 minutes 4 seconds.

Susan Farrugia (48 minutes 36 seconds) is second behind Zarb. Tamsyn Pace (57 minutes 55 seconds) lies third.

The next race in the series will be held today, starting from the Sliema ASC pitch at 6.30 p.m.
