A dumping site adjacent to the Addolorata Cemetery is to be turned into an extension of the country's main cemetery, following the approval by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority of an application submitted by the Public Health Department.

A total of 1,800 graves will be built on the 20,000 square metre site, a spokesman for Mepa told The Times. The application was approved on Monday.

The graves will be given to people who have pending applications. There are currently 2,796 pending applications but it is not excluded that some of the applicants might also have applied for a grave in another cemetery.

There are also plans for the landscaping of the site to complement the cemetery and surrounding areas.
