The annual collection traditionally known as Peter's Pence, in support of the Holy Father's initiatives towards works of charity the world over, will this year be held during Saturday evening and Sunday Masses on July 1 and 2.

In a circular, the Archbishop's Curia appealed to all faithful to be generous in their offerings.

This annual collection is held close to the Feast of St Peter and St Paul (Mnarja) in the framework of a custom of the Church in Malta which seeks to enhance its ties with Peter's successor, primarily by praying in favour of the Holy Father's intentions and also by encouraging members of the Church to contribute to the Pope's support to works of charity.

The total sum raised in Malta during last year's Peter's Pence collection amounted to Lm11,914.

The Pope regularly sends aid to many countries in the way of charitable donations mainly to populations hit by natural disasters or wars, as well as towards humanitarian and Christian development projects in favour of the education, health or work possibilities of the poorest people in the Third World.

These donations are distributed through the Cor Unum Pontifical Council.
