The House of Representatives yesterday expressed its condolences to the family of Joe Baldacchino, a Labour MP for 21 years, Deputy Speaker and briefly, Speaker, who passed away last week.

Justice Minister Tonio Borg said Mr Baldacchino was a true gentleman who loved his political party but was fair with his political adversaries.

Opposition leader Alfred Sant praised Mr Baldacchino for his long service and the manner how, despite being very active in politics, he remained calm and spoke in a balanced, objective way.

Mr Speaker Anton Tabone said the Chair agreed with the views expressed by both sides and expressed his condolences to the Baldacchino family.
