My partner and I have recently returned from our sixth trip, in four years, to Malta together. While there, I read The Times frequently and was disappointed to see negative English tourists' views printed.

If a first-time visitor was to read those reports of complaints about tourism in Malta they would most likely decide against visiting. I want to put this right; every visit we have made has been better than the last. In our first visit, we made friends in a Paceville bar we frequented. We are still in touch with them and spend at least one day of our holiday with them. They always offer to help us, often pay for meals and even invited us to a recent family wedding.

On our last trip, we made a new friend. We met him in a bar that we asked for directions in. In England you would be very lucky to get someone who would even point you in the right direction, but this man walked us to the door, then stayed with us and afterwards took us for lunch in a quaint little Maltese restaurant. He refused to let us pay the bill. You don't get that in the UK, so I don't understand people who complain about tourism in Malta.

The Maltese are the most hospitable and welcoming people you could wish to meet. The majority enjoy the company of the English and can't do enough to improve your stay in any way they can.

Those who complain about the way the English are treated in Malta should compare it with the way they are treated in England, for example. Perhaps there is no hope for them!
