Andre Agassi said yesterday he would retire from tennis after this year's US Open.

"This Wimbledon will be my last and the US Open will be my last tournament," he said.

The 36-year-old won the first of his eight grand slam singles titles at Wimbledon in 1992.

Agassi said he had made his decision months ago but explained: "I waited until now to say something as it is only right that I say it at the place where it all started."

Agassi plays Serbian Boris Pashanski, a silver medallist for Malta in the 2005 GSSE, in the Wimbledon first round.
