After months of hard work, San Anton School students, together with their parents and friends, were able to attend a very special evening, the much anticipated LYR-X Radio Awards.
The award ceremony, ably compared by Tom Paris, Zak Cachia, Tammy Fenech and Lisa Zammit Endrich, was held at Sir Temi Zammit Hall at the University.
For the past five years San Anton School has had its own radio broadcasting within the school. Three times daily the students produce their own programmes, broadcast in English, Maltese, French and Italian. The school radio also features news and music programmes
This year the students worked hard to improve the quality of broadcasting. With the help of 89.7 Bay, students learned not only to vary the type of songs played, but also to introduce different kinds of music and deliver news in a different way.
The students also visited 89.7 Bay in St Julian's and spoke to real DJs. This experience helped them take their programmes on LYR-X radio to a higher level.
This year's award ceremony included a variety of singing and dancing. The evening saw a lot of local talent performed live: those who are already established as Malta's leading singers, like Ira Losco, Scar, and Chris Dalfonso, a former student of San Anton School.
In addition, the school band performed four numbers, and for the first time ever during the awards, Ira Losco sang a duet with Strana Risiott, a San Anton student. They performed Get Out from Ira's new album.
The highlight of the evening was the award ceremony, during which four awards were presented. By student vote the Most Original Programme Name went to Andrew Bartolo and Cecilia Zammit Endrich with the programme A Guy, a Girl and a Radio Show and most popular programme of the year went to Brunette Babes Debbie Mangion and Nicola Grech.
Two further awards were announced: Best Programme went to Crazy Frogs - Kim Camilleri, Lizzie Cremona and Francesca Pisani. Best DJs for this year went to 50% Angels and 50% Devils Strana Risiott and Alex Abela.
The winners of these two awards were decided by 89.7 Bay DJs and, according to Jonathan Abel, "it wasn't an easy choice".
