St Theresa Girls Junior Lyceum in Mriehel recently held its annual Prize Day, this year being a bit special since it marked the retirement of the school headmistress, Ms Josette Mifsud Matrenza, and the appointment of the new headmaster, Mr Robert N. Borg.
Before the presentation of this year's prizes, there were the customary speeches. Mr Borg's speech, which emphasised the role of the school as an oasis of learning, was followed by a short speech by Mr Alfred Mallia, director of education.
The school performance was based on Andrew Lloyd Webber's famous musical The Phantom of the Opera. Students Amanda Genovese, Jessica Said and Christine Pace played the roles of the Phantom, Christine Daaé and Raoul, and Viscount of Chagny respectively.
The musical brought together a cast of around 40 students ranging from Form I to Form 4, who worked together during their mid-day break. Directed by Ms Sue Dowling and vocally trained by Ms Maria Dimech the evening proved to be another memorable one for the school.
Stage design was in the hands of Alan Zammit with the help of Elizabeth Fenech, Stephen Grima and Alex Francalanza. Projections were designed by Exor Group Ltd.
A number of students and teachers were involved in all the other complex details that such a production entails while the elaborate costumes were hired from the Manoel Theatre and Louie Noir.
