Main shippers and forwarding agents were recently rewarded by Lufthansa Cargo for their results achieved in 2005. Lufthansa Cargo, the pioneer in the worldwide air-cargo industry, has been rewarding its agents and shippers in Malta for the past 12 years.

Tony Mifsud, regional manager sales and logistics for Malta, welcomed the distinguished guests and spoke about the strategy of Lufthansa Cargo in Malta which, he said, has always been based on continuity, loyalty and trust.

Thilo Schaefer, general manager sales for Italy and Malta, gave a short overview of the positive results of Lufthansa Cargo for 2005. As a stand-alone legal entity that was divided from the passenger division 11 years ago, Lufthansa Cargo produced an operating profit of €108 million for the year. This represented around 19 per cent of the operating profit of the whole Lufthansa Aviation Group, a good achievement when one considers the instability prevailing in the global economy last year.

Mr Schaefer also noted that this figure was a testament of the cargo carrier's efficient worldwide employees - within the Lufthansa Group, only five per cent are employed by Lufthansa Cargo.

The German Ambassador, Georg Merten, presided over the award ceremony. The bronze awards were given to Messrs Carmelo Caruana Ltd, Eyre Cargo, Malta Fishfarming Ltd and Gollcher Air Express. The silver award went to Messrs Tubeline Ltd. The gold award went to MAL Services Ltd and to STMicroelectronics Malta Ltd from the shippers' side.

Lufthansa Cargo Malta has for the past four years rewarded personalities who came up with initiatives which excelled in innovation and support towards Lufthansa Cargo. The Lufthansa Cargo Personality Award for 2005 was presented to Lino A Bonello, director at BAS Ltd. Mr Bonello, a man with 45 years' experience in the air cargo industry joins previous personalities like Mr S. Portera, director of STMicroelectronics, Mr C. Azzopardi, director of AJD Tuna, and Mr M. Licari, director of Tubeline Ltd, who received the prestigious awards in the previous years.

Representatives of Delvag Insurance, Lufthansa Cargo Charter, Time-matters, and TRAXON, affiliated companies of Lufthansa and Lufthansa Cargo, were pleased to mingle with Maltese customers and meet their clients in the elegant setting of Villa Arrigo in San Pawl tat-Targa.

Lufthansa Cargo is no newcomer to the airline industry in Malta. In the past 22 years, export capacity of Lufthansa has grown to about 45 tons per week. Lufthansa Cargo is always searching for more capacity even by purchasing other airlines' belly space - a novelty in the air cargo industry.
