Council stresses need for educational continuity

The National Youth Council believes in continuity in the education sector, stressing that there should not be initiatives started and then not completed, since this would have a negative impact on students.

In a meeting with Opposition Leader Alfred Sant, council president Lorenzo Vella said the Labour Party's plan on education included a number of innovative proposals to ensure that students progressed. Mr Vella said the council would like to see more discussion about certain proposals, including the introduction of a transition year between kindergarten and primary school.

Dr Sant said initiatives needed to be taken urgently to lift the country from its bottom ranking with regard to science, information technology, research and innovation under the EU's Lisbon strategy.

The Opposition Leader said education would remain a priority for the MLP because it believed that the country needs an intelligent society.
