The level of illiteracy was a matter of concern for the MLP, party leader Alfred Sant said when he met a delegation from the General Workers' Union at the party headquarters in Hamrun yesterday to discuss the party's draft plan for education.
The MLP, he said during the meeting, was proposing a one-year transition period between kindergarten and primary education so that pupils will learn to read and write properly.
The GWU delegation was headed by secretary general Tony Zarb.
Another meeting on the MLP's education plan was with the Malta Union of Teachers led by John Bencini.
