Eighteen Maltese projects have been approved this year, with over €488,000 awarded, under the EU's Leonardo da Vinci Programme, which aims to promote vocational training.
The Education Ministry said this was the most successful year in terms of funding for the Leonardo da Vinci National Agency, which falls within the European Union Programmes Unit (EUPU).
Following a promotional campaign focused particularly on the inclusion of private companies and entities, three projects from the Parliamentary Secretariat for Small Businesses and the Self-Employed were approved.
The beneficiaries of these three projects amount to 211. They range from MCAST students, who will improve their entrepreneurial skills, to employees of SMEs who will improve their competitiveness and adaptability to labour market demands. The total funding for these projects is €236,940. Much of this grant is dedicated to fostering entrepreneurial skills in the self- employed or in people who would like to start a business.
The other approved projects cover a wide range of vocational training areas aimed at persons employed in various sectors. These include dog-handling for search and rescue purposes submitted by the Malta Red Cross - Gozo Branch; airport handling; mental health; and training for psychologists.
Another approved project is that submitted by the Speech and Language Department, which aims to offer an international experience to its employees. This is the department's third project in as many years.
