More than 6,000 counterfeit Adidas World Cup footballs were confiscated by Customs at Malta Freeport a few days ago, the Customs Department said yesterday.
The footballs were in a container which was here in transit from the Far East to Mexico.
This was the second haul by Customs in recent days. Last week they intercepted another container which contained 20,000 counterfeit balls.
The latest find was made after Customs officials decided to investigate whether the details in the declaration accompanying the container tallied with what was actually in the container.
Their suspicions proved justified when they found a number of boxes containing the counterfeit Adidas footballs.
A spokesman for the Customs Department said that one of the directors of Adidas will be coming to Malta soon to express the company's appreciation to Malta Customs for their sterling work.
