Former New Zealand rugby captain Tana Umaga is set to play for French club Toulon, local media reported yesterday. Umaga was close to securing a temporary deal worth 300,000 euros for 12 games in the northern hemisphere's winter season, the Dominion Post newspaper reported.

The deal would allow 32-year-old Umaga to play for Wellington in this year's national provincial competition and then return early next year to play for the Hurricanes in the Super 14 competition.

Umaga retired from international rugby in January, having played 74 tests for New Zealand between 1997 and 2005.
