A headmaster at a Hamrun girls' school has been cleared of assaulting and slightly injuring a student.

Raymond Vella, 49, of Attard, had been charged with assaulting, threatening and injuring the girl at Maria Assunta Secondary School on April 29, 2005.

Magistrate Joseph Apap Bologna cleared Mr Vella of injuring the student as, after hearing the evidence, he believed that allegations against the headmaster were false and aimed at getting him into trouble after he had taken disciplinary action against the student.

Mr Vella was cleared of assaulting and threatening the girl after the magistrate abstained from taking cognisance of the charges because they were time barred.

Police Inspector Mario Bonello prosecuted.
