Advertising far-right events

I was disappointed to see in this newspaper an advert by the Alleanza Nazzjonali Repubblikana (ANR) publicising a protest against illegal immigration. One doesn't have to dig deep to conclude that ANR is synonymous with xenophobia and racial hatred.

I was disappointed to see in this newspaper an advert by the Alleanza Nazzjonali Repubblikana (ANR) publicising a protest against illegal immigration. One doesn't have to dig deep to conclude that ANR is synonymous with xenophobia and racial hatred. The very fact that they point out in their advert that racist messages will not be tolerated is, ironically, an indication of what type of crowd such demonstrations have a tendency to rally.

While it is important to ensure freedom of speech, The Sunday Times, as a crucial communication medium in our country, has a responsibility over what kind of information it disseminates among its readership. It should not act as a launch pad for far-right propaganda.

I sincerely hope that, in the future, the editors take this into consideration before publishing such questionable material.

African immigration has caused problems in mainland Europe because xenophobia has ostracised and segregated these people, with unfortunate consequences. It seems that we have learned absolutely nothing from the past mistakes of our neighbours.

Editor's note: While The Sunday Times certainly does not condone or promote racist propaganda, it respects the right of freedom of expression and freedom of assembly within the law.
