Gozitan poet Ganninu Cremona published a collection of poems entitled Weraq tar-Rand (Laurel Leaves), earlier this month.
The 161-page book was launched at the Gozo Ministry conference hall during a soirée held under the patronage of Minister Giovanna Debono. The soirée included a critical appreciation by Joe Camilleri and poetry readings. Pamela Bezzina, Morena and Mario Caruana also sang to a number of poems, composed by Mro Paul Abela who accompanied them on the piano.
Weraq tar-Rand features 80 poems written between 1942 and this year and cover various themes such as the environment, folklore, religion and legends.
This is Cremona's second collection of poems, his first being Warda Sbejha tar-Rebbiegha (Beautiful Flower of Spring) with poems inspired by Our Lady. He recently also wrote the musical 1956, staged at the Aurora Opera House.
Weraq tar-Rand, with a cover by artist John Grima, costs Lm2. Proceeds from the sale of the book will go to the Don Bosco Oratory restoration fund. Copies are available from the oratory in Victoria (tel: 2155-6616).
