Kevin Cassar achieved the best result for the Malta Weightlifting Federation when he claimed the Best Lifter award in the 85kg class at the tournament for small European nations which was held in Cyprus a few days ago.

Cassar lifted a total of 226kgs, scoring 319 points and going on to break three tournament records in the process - one in Snatch, another in Clean and Jerk and a best mark after lifting 8.5kgs more than the previous overall total for the category.

The other three Maltese lifters in the tournament, Clint Grech, Stephen Borg, and Matthew Muscat Inglott, all obtained good results.

Each of them lifted 190kgs with Grech scoring 254 points, Borg 233 and Muscat Inglott 232.

Overall, Malta placed second in the final standings behind hosts Cyprus. Monaco were third and San Marino fourth.

Open competition

Ten countries took part in the Open tournament held in conjunction with the event for small states.

Here, Malta placed fourth overall. The other competitors in the Open hailed from Greece, the winners, Cyprus, Scotland, Ireland, Monaco, England, San Marino, Saarland and Wales.

In Cyprus, the Maltese team was accompanied by federation secretary David Saliba, national coach Jesmond Caruana and coach Mark Pirotta.
