Vittoriosa mayor John Boxall was yesterday cleared of tampering with the electricity meter at the local council offices after a magistrate ruled the charges had not been proven.

Magistrate Anthony Vella cleared Mr Boxall of stealing Lm190 worth of electricity from the Vittoriosa local council, situated in Couvre Porte, and supplying a restaurant with electricity from the council's service box against payment between August and November 2004.

Police Inspector Alfred Mallia is prosecuting.

Lawyer Chris Cardona appeared for Mr Boxall.
