Amendments to the Education Act, which will start being debated in Parliament next week, will for the first time provide the legal basis for the Institute for Tourism Studies, Education Minister Louis Galea said.
The new law will ensure that the ITS provides courses and programmes, at the levels of further and higher education, that lead to recognised qualifications in trades, skills and professions that are necessary in the field of hospitality in general and particularly in the tourism, restaurants and catering sectors, he said.
The law calls for a curriculum that provides ITS students with lifelong learning skills and the holistic development of the individual.
Dr Galea was inaugurating the ITS Final Year Students 2006 Integrated Projects Exhibition at the institute's Pembroke Suite Restaurant. The exhibition shows projects which fourth-year students had to complete following a 12-month international internship before graduating for their ITS Diploma.
The exhibition will remain open until today from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 4 to 7 p.m.
