Alex Borg stayed on course to retain the title he won last year in Poland after working his way to the semi-finals of the 2006 European Championships which are being played in Romania.

Last night, Borg beat Yannick Poulain, of France, 5-1 in the quarter-finals after having eliminated Dutchman Roy Stolk, 5-0, in the previous round earlier in the day.

Against Poulain, Borg took the first frame 72-35 with a break of 56. He added the second (73-5), helped by a break of 47, and two other frames for a 4-0 lead.

Poulain avoided the whitewash by winning a scrappy fifth frame but it was Borg who booked a place in the semi-final when he clinched a close sixth frame on the pink.

In the last four, Borg faces Norway's Kurt Maflin.

Maflin yesterday eliminated Simon Zammit in the last 16 before beating John Torpey, of Ireland, 5-0 in the quarter-finals.

Late on Monday, Zammit qualified for the last 32 stage with a close 5-4 win over Sean Gray.
