I refer to a report entitled No Swimming In Parts Of Ghadira (June 9) about a sewage overflow that caused a No Swimming notice to be issued by the Department of Public Health.
A small sewage overflow into the sea occurred after a blockage caused the rupture of a sewage main.
The report may lead readers to think that sewage was still flowing into the bay even after a number of days.
I would like to reassure readers that the wastewater section of the Water Services Corporation took immediate steps to repair the ruptured main and the sewage overflow was stopped within a very short time after it occurred on June 2. However, due to the nature of public health notices, a certain time delay is necessary before an "all clear" can be issued. This is because test results take time to be finalised.
The Environmental Health Unit within the Department of Public Health must, quite rightly, put the public's health and safety before all other considerations.
