Wards and corridors at St Vincent de Paul Residence will not be washed but merely swept as from today following directives issued by the General Workers' Union.

Garbage bags, bags with nappies and trolleys with food remains will not be taken out of wards.

The washing of plates, both in the morning and evening, will not take place as long as there is only one employee in a ward. The cleaning staff have been directed not to carry out chores outside wards except to take food trolleys from the kitchen and back.

Moreover, cleaning staff have been ordered to only take orders from their respective supervisors.

The union said in cases where there are two workers in a ward, each should work at one end of the ward and follow directives.

The directives were issued following complaints by the union about the lack of cleaning workers and what the union called exaggerated delays in discussions about a cleaning allowance.

The union advised other workers not to do the work usually carried out by the cleaning staff.
