Maltanet has announced that in the coming days all existing residential broadband connections will have their download speed doubled from 2048kbps to up to 4096kbps at no additional cost.

Maltanet CEO Keith Fearne said: "This upgrade is in line with our continued efforts to provide our subscribers with a broadband service of the highest possible quality at the best prices so that the full potential of broadband may be enjoyed.

"It is our vision to see Malta a leader in the use of broadband in homes, and it is only at higher speeds that this can become a reality." A member of the Maltacom Group, Maltanet is the leading provider of broadband and IP services.

A spokesman for the Ministry for IT and Investment said: "This announcement by Maltanet starts meeting the expectations raised by the privatisation of Maltacom. The government was clear from the outset that one of the most important outcomes it sought from privatisation was improved quality of service to the customer, improved value for money and results in the effort to improve accessibility to technology in the Maltese society and economy.

"Maltanet's announcement will mean tangible progress in the country's effort to promote an information society. Critics of privatisation ought to realise today that the benefits of privatisation are real and are experienced not least by the customers of the privatised entities."
