The Eucharist is the paradigm for a spirituality of politics. Like the Eucharist, political spirituality is one of incarnation inasmuch as it incarnates and transforms the world by a kind of politics that is inspired by the Gospel.

The presence of the Christian in the world is comparable to that of Christ in the Eucharistic species of bread and wine. As Christ, in order to remain with us, has to assume the physical qualities of wine and bread, in the same manner, the Christian politician gives a soul to politics (i.e. brings Christ into the political world). When enlightened by the faith, he carries out his political duties in an honest way. His witness is effective because it brings about a synthesis of faith and genuine professionalism.

The spirituality of politics includes the following three factors:

¤ Sharing: The Christian is called to share the same life conditions of his fellow citizens.

¤ Renewal: The Christian both renews and transforms the social reality from within.

¤ Communion: The Christian brings in society fraternal love and communion. He is to show a concrete solidarity with the poor and the oppressed since God himself has chosen their countenance. It is precisely this communion of love, which translates itself into tangible actions, that resolves problems and creates communion.

Political spirituality projects a kind of politics with a capital "P". Its focus is the dignity of the human person. The Church is duty bound to commit herself to propagate this spirituality on the religious, ethical and cultural milieux of our society. Empowered by the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Church has the mission to defend human rights and denounce every form of racial discrimination, torture and oppression. By living up to her calling, the Church herself becomes a strong inspiration for politicians who really want to serve the people who elected them.
