I'm no artist and my taste for art stops as soon as I can't understand what the object represents. So like many other men in the street, I could not find any appreciation for the so-called art structures which were stuck in various roundabouts around the island. Those especially which were chosen to "embellish" the Luqa roundabouts, do not complement the beautiful road works that were executed along St Thomas Street.

So I second artist and writer Kenneth Zammit Tabona (May 30) in his argument that "while newly refurbished roundabouts have been disgraced with the weirdest of sculptures ranging from multicoloured phallic symbols to partially submerged water tanks posing as fountains, a bronze scupture like the Enea which is the finest modern work we have in the genre after Sciortinos and Apaps, has been consigned to obscurity".

I agree with Mr Zammit Tabona that such a beautiful work of art as the Enea should be re-sited in a more prominent place where it can be better appreciated and enjoyed. Furthermore, I dare say that the authorities who took the decisions to install the above mentioned "monuments" should at least have consulted with the local council and then chose more appropriate structures to adorn the roundabouts. I have still to speak to someone who appreciates these strange structures.

And a last point: Should not a short inscription be fixed under each structure to indicate the name of the artist and what his work represents? Many children wonder, baffled by what they are looking at and their parents must get embarrassed trying to find an explanation.
