The Institute of Agriculture is organising two separate short courses, Canine Care and Welfare, and Feline Care and Welfare, between Saturday, June 24, and Saturday, August 5. Each course lasts 14 hours and lectures last two hours.

The aim of these courses is to increase the knowledge of the health and welfare requirements of pet cats and dogs, and to improve responsible pet ownership. The lecturer in both courses is Dr Mauro Buttigieg.

Dr Buttigieg studied Veterinary Medicine at the Università degli Studi di Perugia, Facoltà di Medicina Veterinaria, Italy, and graduated as Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1996. In 1997 he was employed as Veterinary Officer at the Food and Veterinary Regulation Division of Malta in the Animal Health and Welfare Department, a post he held till 2004.

In 1997, Dr Buttigieg also started practising privately as a veterinary surgeon, mainly as a small animal practitioner. In 2004 he was awarded a Masters degree in Livestock Health and Production from the University of London, Royal Veterinary College, United Kingdom.

Since June 2004 Dr Buttigieg has dedicated his time to private practice and lecturing at the University of Malta, Institute of Agriculture, where he is a visiting lecturer for Animal Health and Husbandry.
