The Nationalist Party said in a statement yesterday afternoon that it had a pro-environment policy and it backed the actions the government was taking in favour of the environment. The party said it had been instrumental in putting the environment on the national agenda.
It was PN governments which has acted to close the landfills and invested millions of liri in waste management. It was also PN governments which limited the areas for building development, and 42 per cent of the proposed extensions to the development zones were actually proposed in the MEPA local plans.
The party recalled how responsibility for development planning had been transferred away from politicians.
It also highlighted other initiatives, saying fuel used at the power stations now had a lower sulphur content, and there was an extensive afforestation programme.
It said government spending on the environment had risen from Lm3 million in 1990 to Lm32 million last year.
