It has become customary for local wardens to station themselves at tunnel exits and mete out tickets to vehicles not exiting with their lights on.

I accept and fully agree that turning the lights on in tunnels makes one more visible. What I don't agree with is the fact that we have to do so only because our tunnels are so poorly lit. It takes a few seconds for the eyes to get accustomed to the darkness inside a tunnel exactly on entry and it takes much less than that - a split second - for an accident to happen.

Driving abroad, in and out of tunnels, one hardly notices the difference because all tunnels are so well lit.
